Happy is what happens when all your dreams come true (isn’t it?)

I got a job! A really cool job that is exactly what I wanted! A job whose interview passed in such a way that upon getting the job, I had to sit down and think about all the life decisions I’ve made (learn Latin, go to college in Louisiana so as not to have debt, not go to grad school for library science), and gloat about what good decisions they all were. It’s very validating. I love it when people say “Jenny, you were right,” and it’s even that much better when it’s the universe saying “Jenny, you were right,” partly because the universe uses signs and wonders instead of words, and partly because, you know, the universe is bigger than people.

On the down side, I have to hastily leave my car, my family, my books, and (*sniff*) my puppy really really quickly and move to New York City with unbelievable speed and haste (i.e., before the end of next week). Cheerful adaptation to sudden change is not one of my best gifts, so I am rather stressed. However, soon I will be in New York, so good they named it twice, and when I introduce myself to people and they say “What do you do?” I will be able say “Oh, I am in publishing.”

Yay! Job-hunting was terrible, and I am so glad that it is over!

So anyway if I do not comment on your blogs very much in the next few days, do not think it is because I have stopped liking you. I haven’t! I am just busy doing things like renewing my driving license, getting texting on my phone, emailing my alumni association so I will have people to watch football with, and evaluating my clothes with an eye to living in a place that has actual winter instead of pretend Louisiana winter. (Fortunately I have a fantastically warm winter coat from Debenham’s that when you put it on it’s like snuggling down inside a toaster, except less burny.) If you post something amazing, or read a book you think I’d like, leave me a comment or shoot me an email. I never do this when y’all want people to do this, because I’m shy, but I really hope y’all will be less shy, because I hate to miss out on cool books just because I am moving away.

Here is a picture of my puppy. If that were your puppy, would you not be heartbroken to leave her behind? Especially if she knew how to do high-fives with gusto, caught tennis balls on the bounce, and sometimes came over and rested her whole puppy head on your hand to indicate that she wanted to be petted?

P.S. I will miss my friends and family too OF COURSE more than I will miss the puppy. But I can talk to them on the phone and on Skype and by email and chatting, and I can’t do any of these things with the puppy. She can only give me a high five and try (in spite of being way too big now) to climb into my lap if I am present with her.

And now, a poll. I will be rather broke – fantastically broke actually – but I want a membership either to the Museum of Modern Art or the Met. People tend to answer “the Met” without reflection, so let me just mention that I love modern art, and a MOMA membership lets you bring guests for $5 instead of the usual $20. (This does not mean I prefer MOMA. I do not know what to prefer. I have never been to either one.) Which one’s better and why?

  1. Congratulations on your new job! The move will be tough at first, but I’m sure you’ll settle in quickly. Enjoy New York 🙂

  2. Congratulations!!!!! That’s awesome news, Jenny. Good luck wiht the quick move. I hope you can tell us about your job some time??

(As for the museums, I haven’t been to either so I couldnt’ really say. I do think MOMA is free to the public once a week or something like that, so you might take that into consideration. Or maybe it was just free one day when I happened to be in NYC. I cant’ remember. Anyway, you should check them out and see if they have anything like that, so you can get the best deal.)

    • Thank you!! As far as the job goes, I don’t mind telling y’all what it is, just not the internet. :p Remind me on Twitter sometime and I’ll DM you.

  3. Congratulations!
As a southerner who learned how to dress for the north after wearing southern clothing there for a while, I say get some boots. Things like canvas tennis shoes and suede dress pumps are not going to cut it in NYC in November.
I’ve been to both the Met and MOMA this year, and got the sense that the Met is bigger, so that would give you more for your money.
Today I have a review of a book about necromancy, so you don’t want to miss that!

    • I will get some boots. Boots are definitely high up on my to-do list. Fortunately I already have a lovely warm winter coat!

Yeah, I’m leaning towards the Met at the moment.

  4. Wonderful news! What could be more exciting than a job in publishing in New York? Personally I would wait on the museums – go to both, and see which one makes you happier, AND which one has the best “extracurricular” programs!

    • Good idea! I slightly wanted to get a membership to one of them straight away, and then I’d have it! and I could go all the time! but your way makes more sense. 🙂

  5. Congratulations Jenny! It’s sad having to leave your puppy but you can see her when you visit. I can’t wait to hear about your adventures in NYC! (I vote for MOMA because it seems to be your passion).

  6. omg that’s so amazing! Congratulations on your job and moving to NYC and WOW! I’m so jealous and happy for you. 😀

I have no idea about MOMA vs Met but from watching a documentary about people obsessed with movies, I think MOMA has a movie component thingy that might be good? So that might be something you’re interested in?

  7. Fantastic!! Congratulations. I agree with Rhapsody–wait and go to both. You can usually apply the day’s admission to a membership after the fact. What a wonderful adventure you are about to embark on!

  8. yay yay yay! Congratulations on the dream job – I’m incredibly happy for you 😀 And best of luck with the move! I’m only just beginning to recover from mine, so you have my complete sympathy (the same goes for leaving lovely puppies or cats behind). I hope it all goes well, and I look forward to seeing you blogging again soon.

  9. Congratulations!!! I’m thrilled for you and hope you’ll be able to talk about your job (even in vague terms) from time to time. Or at least life in New York. How very exciting!!!!

    • Thank you! I will be able to talk about it a little bit more, at least to say I’m an editorial assistant, which is exactly what I wanted, in the general arena of nonfiction. But I can be more specific about life in New York, once I get there!

  10. Good for you, that sounds amazing! It would break my heart to leave my doggy behind.

I’ve been to NYC twice and visited both museums. I personally preferred the Met, but that’s the sort of art that I like. Many museums have free days, so I’d suggest going to each museum a couple of times and seeing which one you prefer. The Met is HUGE and it could take several visits to see everything, so you might get more for your money — though of course it could be more expensive! Good luck in NY and keep us posted when you have time.

    • It is breaking my heart. I practically burst into tears every time I look at her. Plus she’s being extra sweet these days. I am going to be such a wreck when I go.

The Met’s a teeny bit more expensive, and appears to have slightly less good benefits than MOMA. But you’re right, it would have more variety. I just don’t know what to decide.

  11. How exciting! I’m so happy that you’ve gotten your dream job and sad for you at having to leave your puppy.

From LA to NYC what a culture shock–but so much culture to choose from in NYC!

  12. Congrats on the job! Wow, what a big move. I hope you love NY. I’m not much of a big city girl but I like to visit there. Good luck on all the settling in.

    • I always claim not to be a big city girl, but I expect I just haven’t given it a proper chance. And I love London with all my heart and would gladly go live there forever. I hope NYC is the same.

  13. Congratulations! That’s wonderful news. I’m in close reach of NYC but have only been once and didn’t visit either museum, so I can’t speak to that. I agree with others that you should go to both and then decide. Maybe if one has more frequent free days, you could buy the membership at the other?

    • Thanks! Yeah, if only I were slightly richer, I’d get memberships at both and spend all my time going back and forth. I might swap out by year – do the Met the first year, and MOMA the second.

  14. Congratulations! Wishing you all the best for the big move and for your new life and job in NY 🙂 This is one of those things that is both terrifying and excellent in equal measure, so I really hope all goes well!

  15. Congrats! I’m glad you found something to validate your life decisions. 🙂

I know nothing about NYC so I have no input. I was there for the first time last weekend and the most I got to do was see Manhattan from a bridge as I drove away toward Pennsylvania.

    • Thank you! I’m glad I did too! Only I slightly wish I’d visited New York more times. I went there once to see the Statue of Liberty, and once for two days when my friend was at Princeton, but that is all. So I am going to be completely at the mercy of maps, and I am not good at maps.

  16. I hope there comes a day when I could shout to the world to say “I have got my dream job!!”… but at the meantime, publishing! Congratulations Jenny! I hope you enjoy yourself in NYC and remember that we are still here reading your blog.

    So happy for you! 😀

    • Thank you! I expect I will have a commute into the city each morning and thus lots of time in which to get my reading done for reviews on the blog. 😀

  17. As a fellow Jenny, I like to hear the the universe say those kinds of things too. Congrats!

As for the MET vs. MOMA: why don’t you pay for a single admission and then take a look at both of them before deciding? So places will refund your single admission if you upgrade to a membership. Worth looking into.

  18. Congratulations on the job!

And re: The Met vs. MoMa, some things you might want to consider:

    Convenience/lack thereof:
Depends where you’re going to be living. I don’t know how familiar or not you are with NYC geography, so sorry if I’m stating what’s obvious, but: the Met is uptown and on the East Side, and the 4/5/6 are the only trains that go nearby, though there are also buses. If you’re going to be on the Upper East Side or off the 4/5/6 line anyhow – or even if you’re living on the Upper West Side, the Met will be reasonably convenient. If you’re farther downtown or if you’re in Brooklyn or Queens, 82nd Street may feel like too much of a trek. MoMA is in midtown, so even though it’s only a little more than a mile south of the Met, it somehow feels way closer to me.

    Added perks:
A Met membership, I think, also gets you into the Cloisters – which is *way* uptown (and so perhaps even more of a trek, depending on where you live), and is really excellent if you like medieval art – or even if you just want peace & quiet.

MoMA, as someone else mentioned, has movies, and your membership will get you in to see them for free. And the $5 guest-pass you mention is also excellent.

    Other stuff:
    – MoMA is free on Friday nights from 4 pm to 8 pm, but in my experience, it is also horrendously crowded on Friday nights from 4 pm to 8 pm.

    – In fact, MoMA tends to be pretty crowded, generally, which is one of the things that’s appealing about membership: members-only-previews!

    – The Met has a “recommended admission” of $20, but you can totally pay less than the recommended price if you want/need to. At the point of payment just say “I’d like to pay -x amount-” and they will let you in for that amount.

If I were getting a membership for myself, I’d definitely go for MoMA rather than the Met – though that may also be related to the fact that I went to the Met fairly often in college (got in for free thanks to school + lived on the Upper West Side), while I think I went to MoMA (where I also got in for free) exactly once during college before it moved to Queens for several years. (I did go to it in Queens but it was much smaller!) So I feel like there’s more exciting newness for me at the MoMA.

    Though really, they’re both lovely.

    • Thank you! And thanks for the brilliant advice. Those are all important things to consider. Especially the Cloisters, as I do like both medieval art and peace and quiet. It’s really nice that the Met lets you pay what you can, but I feel quite guilty. I have a big list in my head of organizations to whom I am going to send a check to pay them back for all the times I took advantage of their sliding-rate fees as a student. :p

  19. Congratulations on the job! That’s so great. I hope you quickly adjust to your new surroundings and come back to the blogosphere. I’m so sorry about your puppy. And, unfortunately, I’ve never been to the Met or MOMA, so I have no insight to offer you there. I just wanted to say that I’m excited for you.

  20. Eeek, this is so exciting! I’m incredibly happy for you! Also, because I’m nosy, I want to know at least what you do, though I can completely understand why you don’t want to reveal where you work.

When I moved to the other side of the world, I felt exactly the same way about leaving my dog. I can still talk to my parents through Skype, and we send e-mails, but my dog and I communicate through cuddles, and we can no longer do that. 😦 Plus, he doesn’t seem to understand the whole idea of video cameras (maybe because smell is such a big deal in his world?) so he totally ignores me whenever my parents hold him up to the computer so I can see him/talk to him.

You totally need to make friends with someone who has a pet. That’s what I did, and my flatmate’s cats have helped me deal with missing Murchie. Only, I do rather miss cuddling someone who doesn’t have sharp claws or hair that falls out and gets all over my clothes.

    • And I have just now realized that when I finally make it down to Louisiana, I won’t be able to visit you. 😦 I do hope to make to New York someday soon, though. My Mumsie and I were thinking of going to BEA next year…

    • Exactly! When I was doing my internship this summer, I missed the stupid puppy like crazy, and every time I saw a dog, I wanted to kidnap it. 😦

I’m sad I won’t be in Louisiana for whenever you go there. :/ I love showing people around and giving them delicious Louisiana food for the first time. My friend Saz obligingly tried fried alligator, and she was very impressed with it. But if you come to New York we legitimately will have to get together!

  21. Jenny!!! I am super psyched for you and the new job! I know it will be a little stressful leaving so quickly, but it is gonna be so, so worth it when you finally get settled in and start the new job. In publishing (!!!). This is such awesome news and I am glad that you shared it with us. I would go with the membership that has the better perks, but your tastes may vary from mine. I will be sure to send an e-mail if I come across any fabulous reviews. By the way, I would totally miss that puppy too. Congratulations!

  22. Congrats on your new job, Jenny! Working in the publishing industry sounds sooo exciting!!! I hope you will share with us about your job and your new place once you’ve settled down. 🙂

  23. How exciting Jenny! What fantastic news – well done you! I know what moving to New York is like – totally stressful – so completely understand you disappearing for a while!

You don’t need to join either – the Met is ‘pay what you wish’ – it recommends $20 but you don’t have to pay anything if you don’t want to! Most people assume they have to pay the $20 but that isn’t true – my friend works there and she told me so! And me and my guests get in free to MOMA with my old work ID (naughty naughty) so just come in with me!!!

I’m excited you’re moving here! If you want to be friends when you arrive, email me and we can meet up! No pressure! 😉

    • Thank you, Rachel! I’m definitely going to email you – you will be the first book blogger I’ve ever met in person. :p

This is good information to know about the Met, but I expect I would feel guilty not paying the proper fee. I always felt guilty going to the V&A and not putting a reasonable amount of money in the donation boxes. (Only I did it anyway sometimes. I was poor.)

      • Great! I look forward to it! 🙂

You are so good – I never pay anything for museums. But then I did work as a fundraiser for the V&A, so in a way, I feel like I paid my dues..!!!

Good luck with the move and I’ll see you in the Big Apple soon! So exciting!

  24. Congratulations, Jenny! How awesome.

I personally prefer the Met, by a lot. There seems to be a wider variety of stuff there, but I’m not into modern art, which you said you were, so this probably shouldn’t have any bearing on your decision!

    • Thanks!! Yeah, the Met’s variety and hugeness is the basis of its appeal to me. I am trying to judge what I will like in New York based on what I liked in London, which is tricky.

  25. Congratulations on the job. Good luck with the move.

I have no vote either way between the Met and the MOMA. I hear they are both fabulous. I think I would start with The Met, because I am not so very interested in Modern Art, and then add a MOMA membership once I had the funds to.

Let me know how “real winter” feels, as the worst I’ve had is a California winter, which is a lot of wind, a lot of rain, and a lot of mud. Enjoy playing in snow, and living in New York.

Enjoy publishing. I am very, very jealous, as I think you likely have a job that I would like.

    And again, Congratulations, Jenny.

    • Thank you!

I will let you know about the winter. I’m not convinced it’s going to be a real winter like you’re thinking of, though, as I’ve been given to understand the city doesn’t do lots of snow but rather lots of slush and coldness. If it’s anything like winter in England, it will just be cold, cold, cold, and get dark early, and I will be very glad I have a warm coat from Debenham’s.

  26. Congrats on the new job Jenny and moving to New York will be fabulous! I don’t know if you know Rachel from Book Snob but she just moved to NYC too recently. check out her blog to read about her new adventures. Maybe you two can meet.

  27. Congratulations! Publishing in New York sounds absolutely amazing! I wish it were me! I’m not fabulous at rapid change either, but in the end it is usually better than stringing it out. Do let us know how you are settling in as soon as you can!

    • Thanks! I will let you know how it goes. But probably not until I am completely settled in and everything is fine. It feels very unreal that I will be completely leaving home forever starting next week.

  28. Congratulations! I just did something very similar about a month ago – I got a job that I didn’t think I would get, and the only catch was I had to pack up and move to Fairbanks, Alaska within a week. It’s really very exhilarating having your life move that quickly.

    • Wow! Well done you! And I would feel much more frightened having to move to Alaska where it is actually truly genuinely cold, and where I do not have any relatives.

  29. Congratualtions on the job! It must be hard to leave everyhting behind (particularly the puppy), but think of all the exciting experiences you will gain whilst being in New York! I hope all goes well.

  30. Congrats on the new job, Jenny, that`s fantastic! 🙂 Good luck and I hpe you’ll settle in well! (I have a Wicked earworm now thanks to your post title 🙂 )

  31. I never comment here because you are cool and I am shy, but just wanted to say CONGRATULATIONS all in caps. I’m sure that you can find someone to hold your puppy up to Skype so you can see each other! Good luck in your fabulous new position.

    • Seriously, you have no idea how astonished I was when I saw this comment. I am not cool! Don’t be shy! I almost never comment on your blog for the exact same reason. :p Thanks so much for the good wishes!

  32. YAY!!!!!! This is so exciting! Congrats on the fabulous new job! That’s so cool that all your past decisions worked out and now you get to say you work in publishing.

Unfortunately I can’t give an opinion on NYC art museums as I have only ever been in the city for two days and visited neither the Met or MOMA as I was working for most of the time. Although I wanted to return before I even left, I haven’t been able to do so yet. Hopefully when I finally make it back you can tell me which is better 🙂

  33. Congratulations on your job! And just remember how great a job it is during all the stress of moving. I hate unexpected changes as well (I guess maybe that’s why I can relate to your idea of reading the end before the middle?) but I know from experience that things usually end up well and that I always feel like I need not have worried that much. I just hope you get to remember that before you start stressing 🙂

  34. I am so happy for you! So fantastic! Congratulations! I’m sure NYC will be lovely and so exciting to live in– there is just so much to do! I hope the move goes smoothly as well.

I understand the vindication thing– I still need that to happen to me… ;/

  35. Congratulations, that is so awesome!
I’ve only been to NYC once, and they’d had a blizzard just before I got there (this was Easter), so I spent quite a lot of time at the Met and liked it very much. But with Christmas coming up in the not too distant future, couldn’t you buy yourself the membership to one museum and get one of your nearest and dearest to give you the other one as a present?

  36. Yaaaaaay!!! Congrats! I’m sending lots of happy thoughts for your move – moving is a big ol’ pain in the butt at the best of times, and trying to do it on the spur of the moment has got to be even more of a hassle, but it’ll be worth it in the end!

My main advice is to have a few books on hand – in your carry-on luggage, as it were – that are either comfort reads or new books that you are pretty sure won’t be too mentally taxing, so that when you’re exhausted but still too keyed up to sleep, you have something available to give your brain a break. (I used the first Sookie Stackhouse book for my last move.)

And don’t worry about the interruption in your blogging – we’re all pretty forgiving of real life getting in the way and will be here when you get back, anxious to hear about how you’re settling in!

    • Thank you very much! I am bringing along a lot of comfort reads, or old favorites that are maybe not comforting but are very familiar. And I’ve been rereading lots of my childhood favorites. 🙂

  37. Wow this is such exciting news. Congratulations!!! It is so sad that you have to leave your family and dog, but I’m sure once you get settled into a job that you are bound to LOVE it will be a bit easier.

I can’t give an opinion on the museums because i have never been to New York but I’m going to go with…I don’t think you can make a wrong choice on this one!

    Good luck with your move!!

  38. All of this sounds really exciting! Moving to NYC! Wow! That’s amazing 🙂 Best of luck to you and I can’t wait to hear all about it once you get settled. As for the question of museums, I have no idea as I have never been to either of them.

  39. I am so late to the party – CONGRATULATIONS!!! Job hunting does suck, a whole lot. And it is awesome that you have a job that is exactly what you want – I’m a little jealous, actually. Good luck with your move, and sorry you have to say bye to your puppy. That is about the saddest thing ever. Keep us posted on the move 🙂

  40. Congratulations on your new job, Jenny! Hope you have a wonderful time in New York! Your puppy’s picture is really nice! Hope you can take her to New York with you, after a while.

I don’t know which museum you are going to become a member of, but hope you have an awesome time at the museum(s)!

  41. Ooh, they liked your Latin! I’m so happy for you, and I can’t wait to hear your incisive views on New York City culture vs Louisiana culture once you are settled in.

That puppy picture is the best. I want step into the computer and scratch her ears.

I second Jeanne on boots. And add that you will want a comfortabler insulateder pair in addition to a cuter pair. With good traction on both. All I had was a knee high gum-soled leather hippie boots when I moved from the desert to Massachusetts for college. They were cold even with wool socks, and would get damp even though I treated the leather. Walking on snow/slush/ice in even as little as 1 1/2″ heel gets really tiring, for some reason. (Sierra Trading Post sells good boots cheaply. You get even bigger discounts from their special sales. I order from them a lot.)

  42. Congratulations, Jenny!!!! *huugles* I hope the move will go well and you’ll be able to relax from the stress soon!

Go enjoy your dream-job! ❤ *sends good vibes*

  43. The Met is actually a “free” museum–you can get in for a donation of whatever amount you want to pay. That includes the Cloisters which is one of my favorite museums ever. So personally I’d go with the MoMA membership.

  44. Congratulations Jenny! This is such exciting news! I have never been to New York so I can’t contribute to the museum discussion, but I wish you much luck with your move and getting settled in and starting the new job of course! And it’s so sad that you have to leave the puppy behind. 😦 Hopefully there will be lots of visits home in your future.

  45. Congratulations from me too, Jenny, it’s splendid news. I’m very sorry about the puppy, though, I know how much I miss my girls when I’m away even for a week. But you will be so busy that it won’t be quite as bad as you think. And she’ll be getting lots of love from your parents!

  46. All the money in the world couldn’t make me live in NYC, but obviously LOTS of other people feel differently.

Being “in publishing” and getting the job of your dreams sound perfectly fabulous. Enjoy enjoy enjoy and keep us posted when you have a chance. Good thoughts coming your way for the big move!

  47. Awww, WHERE have I been?! CONGRATULATIONS and yes, I didn’t see this post until now but – I have no excuses. and I wish you ALL the bestestests! If you ever want to take the train up to Mass and see my NEW PUPPY (which is why I’ve been only allowed little snippets of blogging time – I’ll post more pics soon), you are more than welcome. I have no idea abt MoMA or the Met but I’m sure either will be grand. Very cool, yay to the universe for giving Jenny the dream job! woo hoo!!!! HAPPY for you. 🙂

  48. Wow! Congratulations, I am a bit late I know, but my wishes are heartfelt. My excitement kept building up as I read through your post. I can only imagine how you must be feeling!!

  49. I’m so late to the party, but welcome to NYC! I was not a city person before moving here, or even for the first bit of living here, but I learned to love it!

I concur with many others: get the MOMA membership, then pay what you can when you go to the Met, and don’t stress if it’s not $20. It’s better for the Met if you go there and give them some money than if you don’t go at all because you can’t afford $20, right? Also, if you want to try out either museum, a pass from my work will get me + 1 guest in for free! No pressure, since you have not actually met me in real life. And congrats!
