I know! I’m so fickle! But: This does seem to be the pattern with me and the new kid. My heart is hardened against him like the Pharaoh against Moses, and I watch the clips with glowery eyes and my arms crossed, and I think angry thoughts about the new kid and his myriad inadequacies. [...]

Review: Rapture Ready, Daniel Radosh
Posted in 2 Stars, Heard about from the internets, tagged "All roads lead to Rome" is an excellent expression though not as good as my total favorite expression "The guilty flee where no man pursueth", Christian pop culture, Daniel Radosh, I did enjoy reading the snarky remarks on Twilight however, last night's episode of Castle made yet another reference to Firefly which isn't really relevant here but it made me so happy that I wanted to share, let it never be said that Nathan Fillion fails to respect his roots, Rapture Ready, stuff I learned includes the fact that the villain of the Left Behind series is the genetically engineered offspring of two gay men on March 30, 2010 | 15 Comments »
You know what expression I love? “All roads lead to Rome.” You know what I love even more than that expression? All roads actually leading to Rome. Rome being, in this case, Christian culture. The other day I followed a link (from where I can’t remember) that promised snarky remarks on Twilight, and as I [...]

At last! It’s March and I’ve finally managed to read another of the books from my list for the Women Unbound Challenge! I’m having to make substitutions to the list because my library does not have Bluestockings (which, oh, I really wanted! but never mind, life is pain), and although it claims to have Foreign [...]
Review: The Unlikely Disciple, Kevin Roose
Posted in 4 Stars, Heard about from the internets, tagged "what it is like to be or do X" is a very tantalizing phrase, about to check out loads of British television from the library, fundamentalism, Jerry Falwell, Kevin Roose, Liberty University, religion, State of Play, The Unlikely Disciple on March 22, 2010 | 43 Comments »
Kevin Roose, son of liberal Quakers, decided to leave Brown University and spend a semester at Jerry Falwell’s “Bible Boot Camp”, Liberty University. There he attended classes on biblical history and evangelism, participated in a mission trip to Daytona Beach during spring break, and joined a support group for chronic masturbators. When he announced his [...]
Review: King of Shadows, Susan Cooper
Posted in 4 Stars, Heard about from a person, Reread, tagged I don't like the guy presenting the case for the Earl of Oxford, in fairness I probably wouldn't care for anyone presenting a case for the Earl of Oxford, IT IS ALL JUST SNOBBERY, just admit that a man of limited formal education managed to teach himself and write the best plays we've ever had, Justice John Paul Stevens, King of Shadows, Susan Cooper, the damn Earl of Oxford did not write Shakespeare's damn plays dammit, this video is adorable, time travel, Time Travel Reading Challenge, William Shakespeare on March 21, 2010 | 33 Comments »
I read this for the Time Travel Challenge. Yeah, I’m not adhering to my list. TOO BAD. I’m making King of Shadows part of a time travel mini-challenge that I call the Books I Like Because They Contain Time Travel and in Spite of Having Been Written by Authors I Do Not Like as Much [...]
Review: Secret Keeper, Mitali Perkins
Posted in 3 Stars, Heard about from the internets, tagged feminism (and not), historical fiction, India, Mitali Perkins, Secret Keeper, so far I have not figured out cricket but I am hoping that will change, Women Unbound Challenge, you know that part in Pirates of the Caribbean where Geoffrey Rush is standing all piratey with his boots and his monkey and his hat as the masts come crashing down? I LOVE THAT PART on March 16, 2010 | 22 Comments »
For some reason I can’t seem to finish any books these days. There are a number of factors involved. I have a lot of good books right now. I am rereading Fables as well as several volumes of L.M. Montgomery’s generally-predictable-but-sweet-nevertheless short stories. I’m also reading The Two Towers, The Bell, Yes Means Yes, and [...]
